Mithila Marriage

As i have mentioned in my last blog that my eldest brother marriage got fixed so we all went to our village in mithila region(Sita's birth place) of bihar's madhubani district. We were all very excited since it was for the first time that we are going to see a marriage of our region since we had never lived in bihar. My would be bhabhi ( Sis-in-Law ) belonged to a village which was just adjoining the Nepal border.
On the marriage day we the baratis ( guests )went by train from our village to the nearest railway station and from there we took the bus ride to the bhabi's village. The bus ride was a nightmare the people were packed inside as well as on the roof top and not only that they were standing on the window of the bus also and we were just praying that how soon we will reach our destination. It was a one hour journey and the road was non-existent and it was a bumpy ride all the way with all the dust. Some how we reached our destination and had a sigh of relief.
As we reached there we heard the song Jay-jay santoshi mata coming from the loudspeaker on a marriage day.We the baratis got assembled at one place and then went ahead to the brides place and in our culture there is no band-baja or song & dance,so we all reached there quietly. When we reached their door-step our feet were first washed by them ( as per tradition) and then rose water was sprinkled on all the barati's and we all got one small plastic rose with scent poured in cotton in-between the rose to give us a feeling of royalty. My brothers would be in-laws are richest land-lord of that area and local people call them as their master ( Malik in hindi ).After that we all received sharbat and break-fast consisting of sweets,dry-fruit,Kachori and namkeen. My brother was taken inside for marriage rituals which last the whole night or upto 4A.M in the morning. After an hour dinner got started with many type of vegetables, snacks & pooriee. They had specially prepared samosa's for us since they knew that we belong to the city and my brothers two friend were also along with us.Our cousins when came to know about it they all started eating samosa with the result after a while relatives of bride side came with folded hand that now the samosa's had got finished since we had prepared in small quantity thinking that only city people will eat it and all the baratis had a hearty laugh because that is what we wanted. Then started the main course and seeing the dishes and we are non-vegetarian brahmins so we eat mostly the non-veg the friends of my brother got surprised that how can anybody can eat so much, they finished their meal in 15 minutes but as per our tradition we eat together sitting alongside and till the last person finish his dinner you can not get-up.And the dinner went upto 4 hours.Last came the sweets consisting of five type of sweets and the main sweet was rosogullas. After eating all stuff for hours some of the baratis ate 100 rosogullas. There is a tradition of women of brides side singing folk songs abusing the baratis and grooms father and relatives while they eat. After finishing dinner groom father along with baratis go to see the bride and give her the blessings.
