My Grandparents wanted to perform our upnayan sanskar before there death but we were reluctant to do so because you have to shave of your head to perform this ceremony. But my father told us that it is their last wish and we loved our Grandparents too much so we agreed and we all went to our village in bihar's madhubani district.Apart from shaving head of all hair you are required to wear a dhoti also but i told my grandfather that i will do everything but can't wear the dhoti because i had the fear that it might fell down since i had never wore the dhoti so my grandfather allowed me to do the ceremony in pants.I was 13 years of age and it was 1979.
The sacred Yajnopavitam is known by many names such as yagyopavitam, janeu etc.
It is a thin consecrated cord, composed of
Three Debts:
. the debt to one's teachers.
. the debt to one's parents.
. the debt to the sages/scholars who discovered knowledge, which now enriches the wearer's life.
Purity:
The strands represent purity in thought, word and deed expected from the wearer.Upanayana initiates the boy into the study of brahman or the vedas.Traditionally the ceremony was performed to mark the point in which boys began their formal education. The ceremony should be performed when the boy is seven year old in Brahmin varna and atleast 13 years in kshatriya varna. The youngster is taught the secret of life through Brahmopadesam or the Gayatri mantra. The child then becomes qualified for life as a student or Brahmchari,as prescribed in the Manusmiriti. It is a three day ceremony and in mithila culture we have to feed ( Bhoj ) to the entire village on two days and on the first day family members, relatives and guests. It is a huge ceremony and considered more important then marriage and we have to spend money in huge amount because of bhoj plus you have to distribute cloths to each relative.I remember that we had prepared 15000 Rasgullas and Gulabjamuns. ( Sweets)
