RITUALS AFTER DEATH.

As i have told you in my previous blogs that my mother went on heavenly abode on 23rd nov.2014 at the age of 73years immediately after listing to bhagwat katha organised by her in our village Tamuria of Madhubani district of BIHAR.
We observe mourning for 13 days after death of a person which is called "TEHRAVI" in our maithil brahmin community. On the ninth day after death we gents family members have to get our heads shaved completely of hair specially sons and Ladies have to cut their nails.
The puja is not performed in house during this entire period by not only the immediate family members but these rules apply to extended families also. The sons and daughter-in-Laws are prohibited to eat salt for 11 days and the karta( Normally the eldest son ) who perform all the rituals eat the salt on 12th day.During this whole period he had to sleep on floor with a simple mat and he can not leave the house also.
The ritual's are performed near a river bed or pond and this rituals are performed by a special pundits called "PAATRA" and every area of few villages have their own traditional PAATRA'S which is carried from generation to generation. Then recitation of "Garuda Purana" ( A hindu scripture in which philosophy of life & death is told) is done for ten days in the house.
On the 11th & 12th day the BHOJ ( Bhandara) is given to entire village. On the 11th day boiled plain rice with dal and lot of vegetables and other items are served and on the 12th day poorie and vegetables, tomato chutney along with sweets and curd are served.I am attaching photos of the rituals so you can understand better.
On11th day we have to donate most of the things one uses in his or her lifetime like Bed,quilts, bedsheet, utensils, watch,Television, gold, and most of the items of daily use.Apart from this the most important is gou daan ( Donation of Cow & Calf )again at two place.

    1. Its a ritual. No body is forcing anyone to follow. If your financial condition don't permit. Do what is convenient for you. Do not abuse any ritual of Hinduism.
